Part-Time CFO Services

Senior financial judgment, sized to an organization that does not yet need it five days a week.

Goldenthal & Suss Consulting P.C. provides part-time (fractional) CFO services to businesses and nonprofits that need senior financial leadership without a full-time hire. The role typically covers budgeting and forecasting, cash flow management, financial reporting to owners, boards, lenders, and funders, oversight of bookkeeping staff, and support through financing, growth, or finance-team transitions. Because independence rules prohibit an auditor from performing management functions, the firm provides this service to organizations it does not audit.

What a part-time CFO does

The engagement fills the gap between a bookkeeper who records transactions and leadership that needs to make decisions from them. In practice that means an annual budget and rolling forecast, a thirteen-week cash flow view when cash is tight, monthly reporting the owners or board can act on, pricing and margin analysis, lender relationships and covenant monitoring, and for nonprofits, grant budgets and indirect cost rates.

It also means oversight: reviewing the bookkeeper's work, owning the month-end close, and preparing the organization for its audit or review.

02

When it makes sense

The usual moments are growth that has outpaced the existing finance function, a bank or investor asking for better reporting, a first audit on the horizon, or the departure of a long-time controller. An interim engagement can also bridge the search for a full-time CFO and help define what that hire should be.

Frequently asked

Can our auditor also be our part-time CFO?

No. Acting as CFO means making management decisions and taking responsibility for the financial statements, which impairs an auditor's independence under AICPA rules and Government Auditing Standards. We provide part-time CFO services only to organizations whose audit or review is performed by another firm, or that do not require one.

How much time does a part-time CFO spend with us?

It varies with the organization's size and needs — commonly a few days a month, with more time around budget season, board meetings, year-end, and financing events. The scope is set at the start and adjusted as the organization changes.

What is the difference between a part-time CFO and a bookkeeper?

A bookkeeper records transactions and maintains the ledger. A CFO uses that information to plan, forecast, manage cash, report to owners and boards, and advise on decisions. Many organizations need both, and the part-time CFO typically oversees the bookkeeper's work.
